When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may have the opportunity to pay an extra monthly premium to get additional coverage for fitness or dental benefits. These optional supplemental services are called riders.
Examples of benefits that might be available through riders for certain plans include:
- Dental coverage for preventive care, basic dental services like fillings, and major dental services like root canal treatment.
- A fitness rider that offers a basic fitness club membership and in many locations health education seminars and access to advisors trained in fitness, including fitness for older adults.1
One easy way to tell if a plan has riders available is to search for plans in your area. Just enter your ZIP code, then click the "Show Plans" link for Medicare Advantage or Medicare Special Needs plans. Once you find a plan you're interested in, click the "View plan details" button. If the plan you picked has riders available, they will show up near the bottom of the page in the "Optional Services to Customize Your Plan (Riders)" section.
1Participation in this program is voluntary. Consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program or making changes to your lifestyle or health care routine.
